Project info

I was approached to create clean, realistic visualisations for a range of BBQ grill covers for US company Grillman. Photography was proving difficult due to the amount of creasing on supplied product, and additionally not all sizes were available at the time of shooting. Typically the client had relied on photographing only a couple of sizes to represent the entire range. So I recommended creating 3D visuals instead of traditional photography and retouching. Initial simulations were created in Marvelous Designer using the manufacturing patterns, with a few tweaks made along the way to obtain a drape that the client preferred. In order to get the optimal fit I modelled a custom BBQ grill avatar for each cover size. Once the physics was approved I exported the meshes to Modo and retopologised, adding additional detail including seams and stitching. The actual fabric is a 600D oxford polyester with a weatherproof lining. To create a texture close to the real world fabric I sourced a similar material from Substance Source, and customised that to match the colours, weave size and roughness adding additional subtle creasing and surface variations to maintain a clean but natural appearance. We rendered out six sizes in three colours each using Vray Next in Modo.
