Project info
I resurrected this personal project from a few years ago and updated it for Octane Render. These brushes are hand-made using traditional skills and are beautiful objects. I'm fortunate to own a couple, and their artistry inspired this project. The model was done in Modo, using mesh fusion to trim the holes, as nested dielectrics do not work with Octane hair. Modo's hair was baked to curves to allow rendering in Octane. The wire was built joining the centre points of each hole boolean mesh, then bevelled each vert and moved the centre vert down into the hole. I then subdivided the edge so the conversion to a b-spline gave a nice rounding of each corner. The spline was converted and rebuilt to render smoothly in Octane. The wood is fully procedural, other textures such as the wire, vase and plaster are from GSG. The scene is simple, with an interior HDRI and gobo area light, rendered with ACES.
