Octane w/17.1 - Not Rendering

Hi Darrel! Nice to see you around.

OTOY has limited OS compatibility for the yearly OctaneRender releases and unfortunately, macOS 12.x is not supported in either of the PRIME plugins bundled with Modo 17.0 (2023.x) and 17.1 (2024.x). If you update to macOS 13 (Ventura), you'll be able to run the 2023 plugins present in Modo 17.0vX, if you update to macOS 14 (Sonoma), you'll be able to run both 17.0 and 17.1, and if you update to macOS 15 (Sequoia) you'll only be able to run Octane in Modo 17.1.

If you purchase a Studio+ subscription from OTOY, you could run the external 2022 plugin (see here) in Modo 15/16, which does appear to be compatible with macOS 12 (see here.

Due to its nature as a GPU renderer, it seems pretty strict about graphics drivers and versions.

This update adds an updated UI color scheme, additional performance improvements for many items, weight painting and multi-threaded drawing, tool improvements to the Slide tool, Linear and Radial align, the Bend tool and more. Modo 17.1 also adds the incredible rigging and animation tool, Auto Character Setup 3 along with built-in GoZ support for transferring meshes between Modo and ZBrush.

Is there a penalty when renewing a maintenance plan after allowing it to lapse?

Other Foundry products are different than Modo, in this regard. If you lapse on your maintenance to become current again you have to pay for all the maintenance you missed. There is no such requirement for Modo AND there is no price increase if you lapse and return. This was changed (somewhat) recently (last year, I believe) and probably explains why you were quoted a higher price if you lapsed.

macOS Sequoia incompatibility

We are trying to get it included in the 17.1 release. As a different version is bundled in 17.0 builds, those will not be updated, so if you need to update your OS, but not Modo (to 17.1) then you will need to purchase the Studio+ version of the plugin from OTOY to run it on17.0.

Which Apple version?

Our builds are named as OSX (Intel) and ARM (Apple Silicon). Either will run on Apple Silicon hardware, and while ARM will be faster (native), the OSX build has features which are not supported on the ARM build (FBIK, including the pose tool and retargeting, as well as AxF materials). Also, the OSX builds do not bundle the OctaneRender PRIME plugin.

I assume you are trying to use a pre-Modo 14.1 version which is no longer secure, due to OpenSSL vulnerabilities. All customers with licenses that lapsed prior to 14.1 were updated to 14.1, so you should be able to run that. If you can't please contact support.

Cant activate Pose Tool

If you are running the macOS ARM (Apple Silicon) build, it doesn’t support the IKinema library, which is required for FBIK, the Pose tool, and retargeting.

You can, however, use the macOS OSX (Intel) build through Rosetta2 emulation.

If you are using another platform, then I’m not sure what the problem might be.

New MODO install on Mac Silicon based computer

By default macOS uses the F-keys for other purposes. Go to System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts... then Function Keys and enable the "Use F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys".

If you are on a laptop, you can also press Fn+F6, without enabling that option. I think it works on desktop system also, but the Fn key isn't as handy on most external keyboards.

File Does Not Exist

If you go to your System Settings > Privacy & Security and look in Files and Folders, is there an entry for Modo there? If so, when expanded does it show access enabled for the Documents folder?

If Modo isn't there, I'm not sure how to add it, but you can add Full Disk Access by going back to the Privacy & Security > Full Disk Access, clicking the + at the bottom then navigating to the location where your Modo application is installed.

File Does Not Exist

How are you trying to open the file (File > Open, or drag and drop)? macOS can be a bit restrictive if you place files in folders that it doesn't want apps to access by default (i.e. a system folder or such). Typically, you should see a popup OS dialog asking for permission to read a file from such a location, but it sounds like you didn't.

What location can't the files be opened from?

Which folder and files are you having trouble with? LXO scene files or images/assets associated with them? Presets? Modo has a specific set of places that it looks for things. The one that is easy to modify is the external Content, which can be set in Preferences (see screenshot).
